PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP)
Grade 1 to Grade 5
Learning within PYP is inquiry-based. All subjects are taught within ‘Units of Inquiry’; but may in addition be given time as distinct subjects. This arrangement allows flexibility and spontaneity as well as depth and structure, and pays full attention to the development of subject-related skills. Research activities - individual and group are a notable feature of the PYP classroom, and help students from an early age to become independent and confident thinkers and learners.
Specialist teachers are responsible for Art, Drama, Information Technology, Physical Education and Music as well as French, Hindi and Mandarin. In all these areas links between class teaching and specialist subjects are emphasized.
Children who do not have English as a first language are assessed when they enter the school. Those needing help are placed in an English as a Second Language (ESL) support section for a part of the academic day, based on the language proficiency of the student. Ultimately, each child is fully mainstreamed into the regular instruction programme.
